Meta Tag Tutorial

Learning about HTML Meta Tags

Meta tags are be located in the HEAD section of an html document, between the <HEAD> </HEAD> tags usually found on the first few lines of the HTML source under the title of the document. To see an example of Meta tags, view the source of this document, or keep reading.

Most search engines index web sites like kevinwojciksproshop.com based at least partially on the Title, and Meta-Tag information found in the head of the document.

If you do not have properly formatted META information, your site will suffer lower placement in the search engines, or not be listed at all!

Example Meta Tags

<TITLE>How to set up proper meta tags</TITLE>

<META NAME="description" CONTENT="How to set up proper meta tags">

<META NAME="keywords" CONTENT="meta, tags, meta-tags, description, keywords, search engines, submit a site, add url">

The Description is normally found under the link in a search engine listing, although some search engines make up a description based on the actual text content of your page. The description should be a few sentences describing you page. Each page in your site should have this Meta Tag. Most spiders only read the first 255 characters of a description.

The Keyword tag is a comma delimited list of words that relate to the content of the page, this should be search terms and words you think people will enter into an engine when looking for a page like yours. Try to use at least 10 and no more that 50 or so keywords. Most spiders only read the first 255 or 1024 characters of a description.

Warning Meta tags have been around for about a decade, most search engines will compare the actual content of a site to its Meta information. Many people have attempted to SPAM or Spoof search engines by using false meta-data. For example they may enter popular search terms that do not really relate to the site, so they come up in more searches. Many search engines, will punish a site that tries to spoof, and the site will either be ranked very low, or omitted completely from the engine.

You can copy this meta information and paste it into your HTML, just add your own CONTENT:
